Broken Candle – Wambui Wetu

Once the warm glow warmed the hearts of two

A burning candle many colors by night and day

Some colors laughter, some colors tears

Some colors silence, some colors delightful noise

Some colors of joy and some a little sadness

Colors of trust and sharing

Fear and fearless daring

The glow weathered seasons

Still keeping warm… warm… warm…

With every melting drop the hearts of two melted

Then in one instant the flame met its threat

Hearts of two watched the fluttering fight

One quick hand sheltered its form

Burning but loving the love over the cost to keep it

Now many winds past

The candle lies on the little mountain of its warm past

Cold and broken from its root

Hearts of two stare at it helplessly

None willing to strike the reviving match

Both their winds rage their muted defiance

If you listen closely

You may hear love’s tears fall at the two hearts’ feet

As their banter drones on

On things quite less important

Than the broken candle between their hearts

Blindly they stare at its remains

Silence finally subdues the candle’s lagging warmth

Two hearts rise to walk away…
Broken!
